The Sizzler Restaurant franchise was founded in 1958 by Del and Helen Johnson in Culver City, California. It was the pioneer of the "pay first" fast casual restaurant concept. Established in 1990, MultiSystems Restaurants, Inc. "MultiSystems" acquired the only existing Sizzler Restaurant in Puerto Rico, and after extensive remodeling, the restaurant opened its doors to the public on February 14th, 1991 under the management of MultiSystems. The Company currently owns and operates thirteen Sizzler Restaurant establishments around Puerto Rico. Restaurants Operators, Inc. (ROI) was founded in 1996, opening the first store of LongHorn Steakhouse in the town of Bayamon in 1998, currently has seven stores across the island. The first Olive Garden in Puerto Rico opened in June 2014 with plans to operate eight locations across the island. Currently, both companies employs approximately 2,000 employees, around Puerto Rico, besides its main operation in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

OBJECTIVES:

Challenge

Since 2003, MultiSystems and ROI have utilized HR-Sense, but are now transitioning to a more advanced system that offers enhanced functionality and scalability, and integrates with their POS system. This move is driven by the need for a reliable and adaptable payroll system to meet diverse workplace arrangements and complex pay rules in the restaurant industry. The new solution will also support the companies' growth in Puerto Rico without increasing HR staff or payroll processing times. Additionally, there's an ongoing consideration to align the payroll system with the broader HR functions to optimize efficiency and support expansion plans.

Business Needs

Aside from the short time frame, the new operational tasks to be managed by the reduced Cooperative staff included payroll processing, time & attendance, and HR services. In search of solutions, Rafael Carrión Jr. Credit Union developed a Request For Proposal (RFP) and met with various suppliers. RENOVA Solutions was the only company that complied with the RFP schedule and specifications. "My main concern was being capable of assuming all these new processes and train employees on time. One of our biggest challenges was assuming HR functions while providing all the same services to our members," explained Cruz.
